When standard QR codes are too large: Micro QR (M1-M4) and Rectangular Micro QR (rMQR) variants for space-constrained applications.

Micro QR and rMQR: Compact Alternatives to Standard QR

When space is extremely limited, standard QR codes may be too large. Two compact variants — Micro QR and Rectangular Micro QR (rMQR) — provide alternatives for constrained applications.

Micro QR Code

Micro QR codes have a single finder pattern instead of three, dramatically reducing overhead for small data payloads. Four versions exist:

Version Modules Max Numeric (EC-L) Max Byte (EC-L)
M1 11x11 5
M2 13x13 10 6
M3 15x15 23 14
M4 17x17 35 21

Key differences from standard QR: - One finder pattern (top-left only) instead of three - Reduced error correction options (M1: detection only; M2: L/M; M3/M4: L/M/Q) - No ECI mode or structured append - Smaller quiet zone requirement (2 modules vs 4)

Rectangular Micro QR (rMQR)

Defined in ISO/IEC 23941:2022, rMQR codes use a rectangular shape optimised for narrow label spaces like PCB edges, cable tags, and medical tubing. Key features:

  • Rectangular form factor (e.g., 7x43, 9x77 modules)
  • One finder pattern plus one finder sub-pattern for detection
  • 32 version sizes (R7x43 through R17x139)
  • Error correction levels M and H only
  • Supports Numeric, Alphanumeric, Byte, and Kanji modes

When to Use Compact Variants

Micro QR is ideal for: - Small component labels (electronics, PCBs) - Short numeric identifiers (5-35 digits) - Space-constrained packaging where standard QR is too large

rMQR is ideal for: - Narrow spaces: cable labels, tubing, ribbon - Industrial environments requiring rectangular labels - Applications where height is limited but width is available

Scanner Compatibility

Not all QR code scanners support Micro QR or rMQR. Before deploying:

  • Most smartphone cameras do not natively read Micro QR
  • Dedicated industrial scanners often support Micro QR
  • rMQR support is still limited (requires scanners updated to ISO 23941)
  • Always verify with your target scanning hardware

Comparison

Feature Standard QR Micro QR rMQR
Shape Square Square Rectangle
Finder patterns 3 1 1 + sub
Max capacity 7,089 numeric 35 numeric ~361 numeric
EC levels L/M/Q/H Varies M/H
Smartphone support Universal Limited Rare

Key Takeaways

  • Micro QR uses one finder pattern for small square codes (up to 35 numeric chars)
  • rMQR provides rectangular codes for narrow spaces like cable labels
  • Both have reduced capacity and error correction compared to standard QR
  • Scanner compatibility is limited — always test with your target devices
  • For consumer-facing applications, standard QR codes remain the safe choice
