ISO/IEC 18004:2015 is the primary international standard that defines the QR Code symbology. It specifies the complete technical structure of QR codes, including symbol layout, data encoding modes, Reed-Solomon error correction, data masking, and the encoding of format and version information. The standard is the authoritative specification for all standard QR codes (versions 1 through 40) and Micro QR codes (M1 through M4), establishing the rules that ensure any compliant encoder and reader can interoperate. Maintained by ISO and IEC, it consolidates and supersedes earlier national and industry specifications such as Japan's JIS X 0510. Because it governs how QR codes are generated and decoded worldwide, ISO/IEC 18004:2015 is the definitive reference underpinning virtually every modern QR code in use.
