What is the general rule for QR code size relative to scanning distance?
A commonly applied rule of thumb, derived from scanner optics and camera resolution studies, is that the QR code's side length should be at least one-tenth of the scanning distance. For a code scanned at 50 cm, the minimum recommended size is therefore 5 cm (50 mm). This ratio ensures that a typical smartphone camera can resolve the individual modules at the outer edge of the intended scan range. High-density (high-version) codes may require a larger ratio because their modules are smaller relative to the overall code size.
How does the QR version affect the required print size?
Each version adds four modules per side, so Version 1 has 21 modules per side while Version 10 has 57 and Version 40 has 177. If the minimum module size for reliable scanning is, say, 0.25 mm, then Version 1 requires a print size of only 5.25 mm per side, whereas Version 40 requires at least 44.25 mm per side. Choosing a lower version by reducing payload length or using a more efficient encoding mode therefore directly reduces the minimum required print size at a given scanning distance.
What is the recommended quiet zone size?
ISO/IEC 18004 mandates a quiet zone of at least four module widths on all four sides of a QR code. If the code has a module size of 1 mm, the quiet zone must be at least 4 mm on each side, adding 8 mm to both the width and height. Violating the quiet zone requirement is one of the most common causes of scan failures in print production, as the background pattern adjacent to the code can be misinterpreted as part of the finder pattern. Does screen display require different sizing than print?
On screen, the relevant factor is pixel density rather than physical size. Each module should be rendered as at least two to four pixels per side to ensure sufficient contrast and resolution for camera decoding. At a typical screen pixel density of 96 PPI, a 1 mm module corresponds to approximately 3.8 pixels, which is generally sufficient. For high-resolution displays (200+ PPI), even smaller rendered sizes decode reliably. For codes intended to be scanned directly from a screen — as in mobile ticketing — testing at the target device's screen brightness and viewing angle is advisable.
How large should a QR code on a billboard or outdoor sign be?
For outdoor scanning from distances of 3–10 metres, the one-tenth rule yields recommended sizes of 30–100 cm per side. Practical billboard QR codes are typically 20–40 cm per side because few pedestrians will scan at distances beyond 3–4 metres, and 4G connectivity may limit the usefulness of large-image-heavy landing pages at those distances. Outdoor codes should use Level H error correction to tolerate weathering, UV fading, and partial obscuration, and should be periodically inspected because outdoor environments degrade print quality faster than indoor settings.
