DENSO WAVE
The Japanese company that invented the QR code in 1994. DENSO WAVE (a subsidiary of DENSO Corporation, itself part of the Toyota Group) created QR codes to improve automotive parts tracking. They chose not to exercise their patent rights, allowing free use of the technology.
