Adding decorative frames, text banners, and branded borders around QR codes while preserving the required quiet zone.

QR Code Frames and Borders

Frames and borders add visual context and branding to QR codes, but they must be designed carefully to avoid interfering with the quiet zone and scanner detection.

Quiet Zone Rules

The mandatory 4-module white margin (quiet zone) must remain between the QR code's outermost modules and any frame or border element. The frame sits outside this margin.

Violating this rule is the most common cause of scan failure with framed QR codes.

Frame Types

Simple border: A thin line around the QR code (outside the quiet zone). Minimalistic and universally safe.

Branded frame: A coloured border matching brand colours with a CTA text panel.

Shaped frame: Rounded corners, circles, or custom shapes surrounding the QR code. Must maintain the quiet zone at all points.

Decorative frame: Ornate borders for invitations, certificates, or artistic applications. Test scannability carefully.

Building a Branded Frame

  1. Start with your QR code including the full quiet zone
  2. Add a border (2-5mm) around the quiet zone area
  3. Add a bottom panel for CTA text
  4. Apply brand colours to the frame (not the quiet zone)
  5. Test scannability on printed output

Frame Sizing

For a QR code with a 30mm width: - Quiet zone: ~3mm on each side (4 modules at standard resolution) - Frame border: 2-3mm - CTA panel height: 8-12mm for readable text - Total framed size: approximately 40mm wide x 50mm tall

Common Mistakes

  1. Frame inside the quiet zone: The frame border touches or overlaps the QR code's white margin
  2. Low contrast frame: A dark frame adjacent to dark QR modules confuses scanners
  3. Overly complex frames: Detailed patterns near the QR code can be misread as modules
  4. Asymmetric frames: One side too close, another with adequate margin

Key Takeaways

  • Frames must sit outside the mandatory 4-module quiet zone
  • Simple borders are safest; complex frames require testing
  • CTA text panels below the QR code increase scan rates
  • Frame colours should contrast with both the QR code and the background
  • Always test framed QR codes on physical prints before deployment
